Restoring Sanity to the Sabbath

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it, you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

God's 3rd commandment was explicitly clear:  Sunday is meant to be a day of rest and worship, period.  We are given six days to do all the things we need to do, but He wants us to set aside the Sabbath as a special day.  He deserves our attentive worship, and we need time to refresh and restore our hearts, minds, and bodies as individuals and families.

One simple but impactful step we can take in obedience to God

is to restore appropriate order to the week as He intended:

  • If you own a business, place your trust in God and His perfect provision by choosing to close on Sundays.  This will provide you and your staff a much-needed day for faith and family, and it will assist your customers in prioritizing theirs as well.

  • If you are a worker at a business that remains open seven days a week, ask your boss to adjust your schedule so that you can put God and your loved ones first on Sundays.

  • If you work a typical M-F job, be mindful of Sundays when you plan your week.  By simply thinking ahead, you can do chores or run errands on different days and create a peaceful Sunday for yourself and your family.

Obviously, this cannot apply to emergency workers and first responders, as well as certain industries or services that operate 24/7.  If necessary, those people could still show their effort by worshipping on different days or taking steps to minimize their non-essential activities on Sundays.  Every effort, no matter how small, would make a difference.

Sundays are special, and so are you!
